Before anyone writes in — yes, the colourful coating on these pegs is plastic.

They are not a completely plastic-free product, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise.

What we’re really trying to tackle is single-use plastic: plastic that is made, used briefly and thrown away.

Plastic itself has become so thoroughly embedded in manufacturing, packaging, transport and everyday supply chains that avoiding every scrap of it is extraordinarily difficult.

Before something even reaches an eco-conscious household, plastic has probably played some part in making it, packing it, transporting it or getting it onto a shelf.

And sometimes, even when we’re trying our damnedest, we get caught out too.

We ordered a different type of peg. Our supplier, some 6,000 miles away, sent us thousands of these instead.

And Save Some Green is a small business.

I can’t simply write off thousands of perfectly usable pegs, throw them away and pretend they never existed. I’ve paid for them, they work perfectly well, and wasting them just to make the business look a little more perfectly plastic-free would make absolutely no sense.

So the choice really is pretty simple:

Be honest about what they are, and put them to good use.

Sending them another 6,000 miles back again would be daft.

Throwing them away would be worse.

So here they are.

They contain plastic, yes. But they’re also chunky stainless steel pegs designed to be used again and again and again, rather than another short-lived disposable thing.
