Because apparently even floss has opinions.
Choose natural silk dental floss with a gentle cardamom flavour, or fresh mint vegan dental floss made with plant-based PLA. Both are lightly coated with candelilla wax, so they glide smoothly between your teeth without arriving in the usual little plastic box of bathroom-bin nonsense.
Each 30m spool is available in a reusable glass bottle with a steel cap and built-in cutter, or as one of our handy dental floss refills if you already have a bottle. Buy the bottle once, keep it, refill it and carry on. Splendid.
Which plastic free dental floss should I choose?
Both options are designed for everyday cleaning between the teeth. The choice mainly comes down to what the floss is made from and which flavour you prefer.
- Silk dental floss: natural silk with a gentle cardamom flavour.
- Vegan dental floss: plant-based PLA with a fresh mint flavour.
The silk option is the natural-fibre choice. The vegan option contains no animal-derived silk and is there for anyone who would rather keep the whole thing plant-based.
Bottle or dental floss refills?
Starting from scratch? Choose a bottle. You’ll receive your floss in a neat reusable glass dispenser with a steel cap and built-in cutter.
Already got the bottle? Choose a refill and avoid buying the dispenser again. This is the bit we particularly like: the useful part gets replaced, while the perfectly good bottle stays in service instead of being treated as disposable.
Each spool contains approximately 30 metres of floss, so there is plenty there for many sessions of responsible gnasher-maintenance.

It is a small swap, but a pleasingly sensible one. Conventional floss usually arrives wound around a plastic spool inside a plastic dispenser. This version keeps the job simple: useful floss, a bottle worth keeping and a refill option that means you do not need to start again every time.
How to use dental floss
Pull out a suitable length, use the cutter on the steel cap and gently work the floss between your teeth. Curve it around the side of each tooth and move it carefully up and down rather than snapping it into your gums like an overenthusiastic cheese wire.
The NHS advises using around 30cm to 45cm of floss, curving it into a C-shape and cleaning gently along the sides of each tooth. You can read the full NHS guidance on flossing and keeping teeth clean.
If flossing is new to you, take it gently. Your dentist or hygienist can also help you work out the best technique for your teeth and gums.
How to fit a refill
- Unscrew the steel cap from your glass bottle.
- Remove the empty spool.
- Pop the new refill spool into the bottle.
- Feed the floss through the opening in the cap.
- Screw the cap back on and use the cutter as normal.
Ta da. No new bottle required and no strange collection of tiny floss jars taking over the bathroom shelf.

I don’t usually use floss so I think it will take some getting used to, but it’s much better than plastic floss. The bottle it comes in is tinier than I thought it would be, but it’s really compact and neat and cuts the floss without a problem. Doesn’t have any taste.

I am *really* fussy about dental floss and it’s for this reason I’ve taken a long time to commit to trying a biodegradable variety. My pet peeves with cheap floss are when it doesn’t glide well, when strands get caught between your teeth or when the floss snaps. (Perhaps my teeth are a bit close-set?!) On trying this vegan, biodegradable floss I’d say it’s not *quite* as good as premium floss but I will happily commit to switching to it for the environmental benefits. It glides really well, and has a only a small tendency to snag or snap (I find using a slightly longer length than I usually would and moving to a fresh section every 3 or 4 teeth seems to do the trick).
Very happy with this floss and will be recommending it to friends and family!
