We’ve all seen the photo.
A tiny seahorse clinging to a discarded plastic cotton bud.
It’s not a great look for humanity.
So here are our bamboo cotton buds: soft cotton tips, sturdy bamboo stems and absolutely no little plastic stick lurking in the middle.
They do exactly what cotton buds are supposed to do, without leaving behind a tiny piece of plastic that will hang around until the end of time.
Why choose bamboo cotton buds?
Most conventional cotton buds have traditionally been made with plastic stems. These use bamboo instead, making them useful, familiar and properly plastic free cotton buds.
Each box contains 200, so you should have enough for make-up corrections, fiddly cleaning jobs, nail polish mishaps, craft projects and all the other strangely specific tasks cotton buds end up being recruited for.
- 200 bamboo cotton buds in each box
- Soft cotton tips
- Strong bamboo stems
- No plastic stick in the middle
- Biodegradable materials
- Recyclable cardboard packaging
- Standard and slightly wonky box options
Suitable for vegetarians and vegans, tall people, short people, Iron Man and the amazing Captain Underpants. Even people from Swindon! (We don’t discriminate.)
Another smashing thing!
Yay!
Standard box or wonky box?
The buds themselves are exactly the same whichever option you choose.
- Standard box: a nice tidy cardboard box containing 200 bamboo cotton buds.
- Wonky box: the same lovely buds inside a slightly imperfect outer box, for a slightly smaller price.
The wonky boxes may be dented, creased or generally lacking in showroom glamour. The cotton buds inside remain entirely unbothered and carry on doing their job.
So, if you do not require your cotton-bud box to win a beauty contest, the wonky option is a particularly sensible little bargain.
What can bamboo earbuds be used for?
Although people often search for bamboo earbuds or plastic free earbuds, cotton buds have rather a lot of uses that do not involve poking them into your ears.
They are excellent for:
- Tidying eyeliner, mascara or lipstick
- Correcting nail polish around the edges
- Applying tiny amounts of creams or ointments
- Cleaning narrow gaps and fiddly corners
- Arts, crafts and model-making
- Cleaning jewellery and other small objects
- Any job where your finger is simply far too enormous
Basically, whenever you need something small, soft and unusually precise, a cotton bud tends to appear from the cupboard looking smug.
Are these biodegradable cotton buds?
Yes. The bamboo stems and cotton tips are designed to break down naturally, making them a practical option for anyone looking for biodegradable cotton buds.
After use, clean buds can go into a suitable home composting system.
If you have a wood burner and its instructions and your local rules allow small amounts of clean, untreated natural material, dry buds without glue, make-up, medicines or cleaning products can also go on the fire.
If they have been used with anything unsuitable for composting or burning, pop them in the general waste instead.
They’ll break down naturally, unlike plastic alternatives that linger for decades.
Please do not flush them down the toilet. Plastic-free does not mean sewer-friendly, and your drains already have enough problems without being fed tiny bamboo sticks.
Another smashing thing!
Yay!
A small but important ear-related note
The word “earbuds” is commonly used for cotton buds in the UK, but they should not be pushed inside the ear canal to remove wax. (We know you will, but they say no.)
The NHS advises that putting cotton buds or other objects into the ear may push wax farther inside and make a blockage worse. You can read the full NHS guidance on earwax build-up.
They are fine for gently cleaning around the outside of the ear. The mysterious inner workings are best left to get on with things by themselves.
A wonderfully easy plastic-free swap
These bamboo cotton buds are not a dramatic lifestyle revolution.
You do not need special equipment, a training course or a handwritten pledge to the planet.
You use them in exactly the same way as ordinary cotton buds. They do the same useful jobs. The difference is that there is no unnecessary plastic stem left behind afterwards.
Small swap. Almost no effort. Considerably less plastic nonsense.

Storage: Keep the box somewhere clean and dry. Bamboo cotton buds are biodegradable, which is excellent after use but rather less exciting if you leave the box sitting in a puddle beside the bath.

Can’t fault these ear buds, they work just as well as any other and no plastic so win win!

I think ‘Earbuds’ may be a bit devisive. The negative press around using ‘Cotton Swabs’ as Earbuds has always been there, even though that is what most people, including me use them for! Any scope for a more generic name?

Lovely product, have been using this product for a few years, useful for ears of course as well as being a gentle way of removing remnants of mascarra
when used in conjunction with miscellar water.
