Can you tell we are a bit keen on coconut?
Not only is it rather tasty, but the coir from coconut husks turns out to be wonderfully useful as well.
This little fellow is a coconut tawashi brush. The traditional Japanese Kamenoko Tawashi — which roughly translates as “baby tortoise scrubber”. Quite a good name really, but it looks much more like a hedgehog if you ask me.. Do you get hedgehogs in Japan?
Invented in Japan in 1907, tawashi brushes quickly became household staples thanks to their simple design and surprisingly effective scrubbing power.
The Save Some Green version uses tough coconut fibre bound into a sturdy brush that can tackle just about anything you throw at it.
- 🌿 Made from natural coconut coir fibre
- 🌿 Durable plastic-free scrub brush
- 🌿 Ideal for dishes, pans and sinks
- 🌿 Brilliant for scrubbing root vegetables
- 🌿 Handy hanging loop
Being coconut fibre it won’t scratch your pans, but it will happily tackle stubborn bits of washing up.
Great for cleaning vegetables for your Sunday roast, scrubbing woks, washing up after messy picnics, cleaning cool boxes, the bath, the sink, plant pots in the garden… the list goes on a bit.
If you like coconut-based bits and pieces, you might also enjoy our coconut buttons or the rather lovely coconut wood utensil set.
When this resilient little brush finally gives up the ghost, give it a befitting send off and pop it in the compost. Next year it will be feeding your tomatoes.
We love them and are sure you will too.

Good, but careful of marking crockery when the brush gets old – the bristles get bent down at the end and the metal holding them in place can leave grey marks.

I have only used this once but it seems like a great natural way to clean pots and pans. I am sure they will clean my potatoes and carrots too

I was a bit sceptical with the review that said this was the best washing up brush they’d ever used… until I tried it myself. It is, without a doubt, THE best washing up brush I have ever used. Not only is it plastic free (yay!), it washes dishes better than any plastic one – tea stains and stuck-on food come off effortlessly. The bristles still haven’t lost any shape after two months of daily use, and the shape of the brush is perfect for mugs and glassware as well as dishes and pans. I’m a total convert.

These mug brushes are cleverly designed to get to awkward places. They last for months and months and when they’re eventually past their best, I use for scrubbing vegetables.

Superb washing up brushes. Abrasive without damaging pans and great for washing glasses too.
